LSU Houston has record fundraising year in 2014

As the city of Houston has grown, so has LSU Houston. 2014 was our best year yet! Because of the generous support of proud Tigers in the Houston area and nationwide, we were able to raise more than $105,000 throughout the year to support the university and future LSU students! Way to GEAUX, Tigers!

Record attendance and sponsorships at our annual fundraisers – Crawfish Boil, Golf Tournament and Sporting Clay Tournament – contributed to the year’s success.

LSU Houston hosted Tigers from all over the country at The Official LSU Houston Tailgate prior to the 2014 Advocare Texas Kickoff between LSU and Wisconsin. More than 4,500 Tigers traveled near and far to come celebrate and support us!

Through the continued support of fellow Tigers, LSU Houston was able to make additional commitments and contribute to already existing scholarships in 2014:

    • $50,000 – Champions Endowment Scholarship to the Tiger Athletic Foundation for LSU’s Swimming & Diving Team
      • To be awarded to a member of LSU’s swimming & diving team.
      • Until 2014, the LSU Swimming & Diving team was the only sport at LSU without a fully funded Champions Endowed Scholarship.
    • $30,000 – Greater Houston Alumni Legacy Scholarship
      • Established a four-year scholarship for full-time students from the greater Houston area who have at least one parent who is an alum of LSU, maintained at least a cumulative high school GPA of 3.0 or higher, and are not eligible for traditional merit-based tuition reduction or exemption scholarships.
      • Recipients are chosen by the Associate Vice Chancellor for the Office of Enrollment Management. Neither LSU Houston nor the LSU Alumni Association in Baton Rouge have input into the selection process.
      • Initial payment of $30,000 was made toward this five-year commitment.
    • $10,000 – Patrick F. Taylor Hall and Chemical Engineering Building
      • Renovation and expansion of Patrick F. Taylor Hall, which houses the College of Engineering, the largest college at LSU.
      • Final payment of a $25,000 five-year commitment made in 2013.
    • $5,000 – Division of Student Life – LSU Career Center Project Fund
      • Funding to support the construction and establishment of the Career Center Project administered by the LSU Foundation.  The LSU Career Center assists students and alumni in choosing careers, obtaining career-related work experiences as students, developing job search skills, and securing employment or admission to graduate or professional school.
      • This fund helped to construct the LSU Greater Houston Alumni interview room where students looking for employment in Houston, Texas can interview with potential employers.
      • First payment of a $25,000 five-year commitment made in 2013.
    • $5,000 – LSU Alumni Association Greater Houston Chapter Scholarship Fund
    • $2,500 – Chancellor’s Flagship Fund
    • $2,500 – LSU Alumni Leadership Scholarship Fund (Chancellor’s General Scholarship Fund)

A big THANK YOU to our board members, advisors, volunteers, members and generous sponsors who helped make our events a success. With your ongoing support, we will continue to help future LSU Tigers with the gift of education.

If you’re not a member, join us today and find out how you can give back and support LSU.

    GEAUX TIGERS!

Several LSU Houston board members traveled to Baton Rouge Sept. 26-27 to attend the LSU Alumni Chapter Summit at The Cook Hotel.  The LSU Alumni Association invited chapter leaders from across the country to come together and talk about various topics related to operating a volunteer alumni association chapter and ways that LSUAA can better serve its chapters.

More than 50 chapter leaders – including seven from LSU Houston – attended the summit. During workshop sessions, a wide variety of topics was discussed including the joint membership program, scholarships, financials, the use of social media, student recruiting, athletic compliance, sponsorships, and more.

Everyone also had the opportunity to meet with newly appointed LSU Alumni Association President and CEO Cliff Vannoy and hear his vision for the association going forward.

LSU Houston’s sponsorship director, Ashley Wright, gave a presentation to the other chapter leaders on securing sponsorships for chapter events and gave tips on how to reach out to potential organizations that may be willing to support the LSU Alumni Association chapters.

LSU Houston also did a presentation on The Official LSU Houston Tailgate and the success and challenges of hosting such a large scale event.   It looks like our Texas friends will need this info as the Tigers will return to Dallas in 2018 to face Miami, followed by a trip to Austin in 2019 to face Texas! We love having our Tigers play right here in the Lone Star state!

It wasn’t all business during the weekend. LSUAA took the chapter leaders on a tour of the renovations to Tiger Stadium on Friday. Take a look at the photo slideshow above, but book a trip to Baton Rouge and see the better than ever Death Valley in person!  Later that evening, we were treated to dinner and entertainment at L'auberge Casino, just a few miles from campus.

On Saturday, we continued our workshops and discussions before concluding the summit in time to tailgate because it was game day! All of the chapter leaders watched LSU maul New Mexico State, 63-7, for a beautiful Saturday night in Death Valley (what could be better?) before departing back to Houston on Sunday.

We had a great time discussing how to make our chapter better, and how to continue supporting our mission of giving back to LSU.  Being able to meet with the Alumni Association and other chapter leaders from across the country gave us all the opportunity to have an open discussion about what other chapters do and how to work through some of the challenges we have. At the end of the day, we are all committed to raise money for future generations to receive an education and enjoy the university that has given us so much.

Thanks to the Alumni Association in Baton Rouge for their hospitality and the opportunity to come back to campus! LSU has a bright future, and LSU Houston is excited to be a part of it.

    Forever LSU!

Once again Gameday is making an appearance at LSU! If you've never experienced Gameday in person, we highly recommend it. Get there early and don't forget to make a sign!

If you're sticking around Houston this weekend, come join us at our official game watch location, Christian's Tailgate. Check out the details.

With the Tigers coming to Houston, we had to throw THE biggest party to celebrate the start of the 2014 season. Needless to say, it was a great success!

The Official LSU Houston Tailgate had more than 4,000 tickets sold by our deadline and more than 1,500 were sold at the door! We were overwhelmed with the Tigers who traveled near and far to come celebrate and support us!

Bengals and Bandits, from Baton Rouge, sold LSU merchandise exclusively to our tailgate attendees.

We had a special performance from The Golden Band from Tigerland, followed by the Better Than Ezra Foundation who provided us with an excellent show!

Not only was this event so much fun – capped with a Tigers win, of course – but we raised a lot of money for LSU. Thank you to everyone who attended for your support of LSU Houston. Every ticket purchase will go to supporting our mission and giving back to the university.

Also, a huge thank you to our generous sponsors for supporting LSU Houston and our mission:
